"Meeting with the Deputy Speaker
of the Swedish Parliament in Stockholm and Minstry for Foreign Affairs ”:
The Speaker of Somaliland House of Representatives Mr Abdirahman M. Abdillahi
and Deputy Speaker mr Abdi Aziz Samaleh, Arrived at Stockholm Airport 11 october
2006 at 10.30 am. The delegation was received by members of Somaliland community
and organisations n Sweden. During the visit the delegation was received by
Deputy Speaker of the house of the Swedish parliament Mrs Liselott Hagberg . At
meeting there was also Birgitta Ohlsson, Liberal Party and member of Foreign
Relation Committee and Carina Hägg, Social Democratic Party, member of the
Foreign Relation Committee, Eidarus Sh Adan and Ahmed Abdillahi Awale. The
Speaker and Deputy Speaker was given a warm welcome.
The speaker informed the Deputy Speaker of the
Swedish parliament about the democratic developments in Somaliland and the
different situations Somaliland have passed during the past. The Speaker
emphasized the Somalilands commitment for democracy, human rights and rule of
law. The Speaker invited the Deputy Speaker and the other parliamentarians to
visit Somaliland so that they can see what Somaliland people have achieved
without full support from the International Community when it comes to democracy
and institutional building.
The Speaker, Mr Abdirhman M Abdillahi asked the
Swedish parliament to support the house of representatives when it comes
capacity building, exchange of parliamentarians and support of building a new
house for the parliament. Birgitta Ohlsson, Liberal Party told the speaker and
Deputy Speaker that the Swedish Liberal Party invited two representatives from
Kulmiye Party to participate as observers at the International Liberal
Conference in Morocco in november 2006.
The two parties exchanged ideas about the political developments in Somaliland
and Somalia. The Deputy Speaker of the Swedish Parliament and the
parliamentarians told the Speaker that the Swedish parliament follows the
positive developments that is happening in Somaliland and congratulates the
Somaliland people for the steps they have taken towards democracy, rule of law
and the respect for human rights. The Swedish parliamentarians will work for
close co-operation between Somaliland house of representatives and the Swedish
parliament.
The Speaker and Deputy Speaker met also Mr Anders Hagelberg, Ambassador and
deputy director –general Ministry for Foreign Affairs Sweden, Andreas Ershammar,
Desk officer Department for Africa, Mathias Kruger Desk officer Department for
Africa, Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. The Speaker
informed the Ministry for Foreign Affairs about the current situation in
Somaliland and Somalia. The two parties exchanged ideas about the political
developments in Somalia and the effects to Somaliland.
The Deputy Director General informed the Speaker and
Deputy Speaker that there is a new government in Sweden after the September
elections. The Deputy General welcomed the democratic initiatives Somaliland has
taken and congratulated for achievements and assured that the support for
democracy and rebuilding will continue and should not be channeled through the
Transitional Government for Somalia. There will a contact group meeting in
Nairobi 19 october. Among the issues the contact group for Somalia will discus
is the temporary funds for Somalia and Somaliland year 2007-2009. There will
steering committee.
The Speaker emphasized that the Swedish Government
should treat Somaliland separately from the other parts of Somalia and
Somaliland should be a member of the steering committee and not be represented
by the transitional Government for Somalia.
The Speaker visited also Norway and Denmark. In Norway the Speaker and Deputy
Speaker met Norways ex. Prime Minister Kjell Bondevik, Chairman for Oslo Center
for Peace and United Nations special envoy for Humanitarians Affairs Horn of
Africa and
Raymond Johansen, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The impression of the round trips to the Scandinavian countries is positive and
there is a change of the Scandinavians countries position towards Somaliland.
The meetings have finished in a good atmosphere and gives hope for the future.
The Speaker and Deputy Speaker will continue to visit Finland which is the
Chairman for European Union at the moment.
